Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) Offering

Do you want to ensure the continuous availability of your critical cloud-hosted applications? With KDDI France’s Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) services, define your business continuity scenario! In case of a disaster, your applications automatically restart from a remote site within predefined recovery time objectives.

Synchronous or Asynchronous DRP?

DRPs aim to handle disasters impacting a site by minimizing application downtime. Two types of plans exist, depending on the chosen IaaS hosting solution:

  • Asynchronous DRP: Data is replicated at regular intervals to a remote site. In the event of a disaster at the primary site, critical applications restart on the backup site based on the most recent replication, following predefined conditions (recovery time, delay, etc.).
Asynchronous DRP solutions are offered with KDDI’s Agility infrastructure service.
  • Synchronous DRP: Data is continuously replicated between two sites using an Active/Active architecture. In case of a disaster at one site, no data is lost, and operations continue seamlessly from the other site.
Synchronous or Active/Active DRP solutions are available with the Director virtual data center offering.

Asynchronous DRP Services

Offered as a complement to the Agility solution, KDDI’s asynchronous DRP allows for the disaster recovery of your virtual machines from a remote site.
It includes the following services:

  • Regular, asynchronous data replication to a remote site
  • DRP activation in case of disaster, triggering failover within the agreed Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
  • Return to the original configuration once the incident is resolved
  • Single point of contact with dedicated support personnel

RPO and RTO: Key DRP Objectives

Asynchronous Disaster Recovery Plans are tailored to the criticality of your applications and virtual machines hosted on the Agility infrastructure, based on two key parameters:

  • RPO (Recovery Point Objective): The maximum acceptable data loss window in case of failure. (RPO defines backup intervals based on data volume)
  • RTO (Recovery Time Objective): The maximum allowable downtime for an IT resource (server, network, application) after a major incident.

KDDI’s asynchronous DRP offering provides three configurable RTO/RPO options to match your service availability requirements:

  • RPO 24 hours / RTO 4 hours
  • RPO 1 hour / RTO 4 hours
  • RPO 5 minutes / RTO 4 hours

Asynchronous Disaster Recovery Plan Technology

The asynchronous DRP solution offered as a complement to Agility is based on VMware’s Site Recovery Manager™ (SRM) technology.

Combined with storage array redundancy, SRM enables RPOs as low as 5 minutes, with the following features:

  • Orchestration of disaster recovery plans at the virtual machine level, with different RPOs and RTOs depending on application criticality
  • Execution of failover and recovery tests without service interruption, using the same plans defined for actual outages
  • Automation of failover and recovery processes: eliminating most manual steps of traditional DRPs to ensure a consistent and efficient recovery

Active/Active Disaster Recovery Services

Offered as a complement to the Director package, KDDI’s synchronous Disaster Recovery (DR) solution ensures business continuity for your virtual data center.

The Active/Active architecture provides synchronous replication between two sites, ensuring that no data is lost. This solution also makes it possible to share the workload between both sites, while guaranteeing business continuity in case of an interruption at one of the data centers. This service allows you to implement a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) for your most critical applications.

Disaster Recovery Procedure

Phase1

In case of an incident

First steps of the asynchronous DR plan:

  • Alert sent to the KDDI Operations Center and your authorized teams
  • Confirmation of the recovery plan activation

Phase2

DR Plan activation

Second step of the asynchronous DR plan:

  • Start of the RTO countdown
  • Boot-up of servers on the backup platform
  • Verification of environment configuration (infrastructure and networks)
  • Visual check of successful restart of virtual servers (login screen)

Phase3

Switchover to remote site

Third step of the asynchronous DR plan:

  • Verification of switchover (network routing, firewall, VPN)
  • Notification of availability of administration access
  • Confirmation of accessibility
  • End of the RTO countdown
  • Verification of proper system and application functioning
